Formation: Single circle facing LOD, one child in the center facing RLOD.
Meas. (6/8 time, 2 strong counts per meas.; i.e., 1-4 = 8 counts)
1- 4 As I was walking down the street, down the street, down the street,
5- 8 A pretty girl (handsome boy) I chanced to meet, heigh-ho, heigh-ho, heigh-ho.
9-12 Rig-a-jig-jig and away we go, away we go, away we go,
13-16 Rig-a-jig-jig and away we go, heigh-ho, heigh-ho, heigh-ho.
1- 4 All walk in direction in which they are facing;
5- 8 All stop; those circle face center; the one in the center faces a partner and bows;
9-16 Children in circle clap hands and sing; center person and partner join inside hands and skip around inside the circle. At the end of the musical phrase, the original one in the center joins the circle while the one chosen stays in the center.
Note: After the children have learned the dance, you have two or more children in the center. Another variation is to have both children remain in the center so that each time the number of children in the center doubles.
