LS E-25, Side B. Track l.
Formation: Contra or longways sets of four couples.
Meas. (6/8 time, 2 strong beats per meas.; i.e., 1-4 = 8 ccounts)
1- 4 Oh, the Noble Duke of York, he had ten thousand men,
5- 8 He marched them up to the top of the hill and he marched them back again;
9-12 Oh, when you're up you're up, and when you're down you're down,
13-16 And when you're only halfway up, you're neither up nor down.
17-20 Oh, a-hunting we will go, a-hunting we will go,
21-24 We'll catch a fox and put him in a box and never let him go.
25-28 (Instrumental only.)
1- 4 Couple one marches to the foot of the set (inside the lines);
5- 8 Couple one returns to place at the head of the set (inside the lines);
9-12 All stand on tiptoes for "up" and squat for "down,"
13-16 All bend to halfway and go up and down on appropriate word;
17-28 All face forward. The first couple leads – boys turn left, girls turn right – skipping or marching outside down their own lines to the foot of the set where they join hands to make an arch.
With the second couple now leading, the rest of the dancers pass under the arch and slide back to the original formation. The original first couple is now at the foot.
Repeat 1-28 three more times for all to have a turn as head couple.
